The Ghost by Danielle Steel

Intro : ” The Ghost ” by Danielle Steel is a supernatural romance novel originally published in 1997 .

Summary : Charles Waterston ( an architect ) is newly divorced and decides to take a leave of absence from his job to heal . He ends up in a small town in Massachusetts . Meeting up with an old woman who is obsessed with a dead lady named Sarah Ferguson he then decides to rent a house from her ( the old lady , not the dead one ) . Charles then sees Sarah’s ghost at his newly rented house . Later on he finds Sarah’s old diaries talking about her journey escaping her abusive husband in London and heading onto a boat to Boston in the 1790’s .

Review : Yeah , I’ll be honest and say this book didn’t grab me . I wanted to like it , paid full price , but ( damn ) after the first third the book mostly feels flat . There isn’t enough interactions between Charles and Sarah to justify it as a ghost story , it just ends up feeling like a dude getting obsessed with a dead girl’s diaries . The various romances throughout the book feel rushed , there is plenty of parts when it seems to imply a threat/drama but then the issue is either solved by the next few pages or just dropped because the main characters don’t really care about them in the first place .

Quote : ” He had never wanted anything as badly as he wanted to live here. He believed that houses had souls and destinies , and hearts of their own , and he could feel this one reaching out to him as no house had ever done before , not even the house he had loved so much in London . “
