Summary : A young woman named Twilla is being trained in the healing arts by a local wise woman named Hulde when she is taken by the local government off to be married to a stranger . She manages to get her magic mirror with her before she goes . Turns out , the woods in the area she has been taken to has a bit of a … kidnapping problem . Supposedly there are green demons in there that take men and drives them mad . Not great but Twilla has another problem , the husband to be is not happy with the idea of marriage and is intending to hire a group of mercenaries to have their way with her before the marriage is official so he can call it off . So guess where our heroine is going to run off to ? Come read a tale of dwarfs , animated skeletons , living fungi trees , sprites , elves , moon daughters , doom speakers , and dirt sluts ( my new favorite insult ) .

Review : I’m beginning to think Andre Norton is incapable of writing a bad book . At this point I admit I’ve only read a small portion of her novels . After all , she has over 300 published books . But everything I’ve had the privilege of reading so far has been a banger . Twilla is such a strong protagonist , the side characters feel unique , the world building is better than a lot of novels twice it’s size , and even the slow moments don’t feel like they are killing the pace . I cannot recommend this novel enough . If you like fantasy , well written female protagonists , or just want to try something a little different , then give The Mirror of Destiny by Andre Norton a shot .
