Movie Review : St. John’s Wort (2001)

Genre : Horror Duration : 1h 25m Streamed : AMC+ Director : Ten Shimoyama Screenwriter : Goro Nakajima Starring : Megumi Okina / Yoichiro Saito

Summary : The film opens with some ominous footage involving dolls , bondage , streets , a little girl , and a mad man . Then we follow 3 young people making a video game . A new girl named Nami is helping with the art . Nami convinces her ex to join her in checking out this old mansion she recently inherited so they can use it for inspiration in the video game . Turns out it belonged to her long lost father . She doesn’t remember her father or this house but she does have bits of dreams she thinks could possibly be connected . One of the first things she discovers is the fact that her father was a famous painter and also there is a corpse in his studio … and that’s just the start of the mysteries of the house . Come watch this story of macabre twists and turns involving the darkest of family secrets .

Review : This is a good movie . At first I wasn’t sure if I would because it had a funky look to it but as the film goes on the odd look works in its favor . Some parts are shown like a video game , others show things from a handicam perspective , then CCTV , some “Saw” style rapid cuts , and then back to traditional film perspective . The story is filled with suspense and intrigue , acting is pretty good , and it feels like a really good haunted house tale . On a side note , I learned this was based off a video game afterwards but since I’ve never played it I can’t judge how faithful it is . Overall , I’d suggest checking it out if you want a good mystery story with haunted house elements .
