Movie Review : Aragne : Sign of Vermillion (2018)

Director/Screenwriter/Score: Saku Sakamoto Duration : 1:14:51 Genre : Horror/Fantasy/Thriller Streaming : Hidive Starring : Kana Hanazawa/Ayano Shiramoto/Yosuke Ito

Summary :It opens up in what looks like a mental hospital . Looks like a mysterious disease is spreading . A nurse is murdered by a patient suffering from bad hallucinations … that may not be hallucinations . Then the patient themselves gets killed by a monster . Next we follow a young woman named Rin Shiida . You see she’s in a bit of a difficult situation , she is living in an apartment building that’s more than a little run down and filled with creepy stuff . The place seems to be messing with her mind as she struggles to sleep and seems to be hallucinating as well . Rin meets a young girl named Nasuha and this Nasuha tells her of a Savior and how they may be tied to the mysterious events around the apartment building . Oh hey , there’s a pretty moth !

Review : So full disclosure , I accidentally watched the movie in this series made after this before this one so that is probably coloring how I see things . That being said , both films are a trip so I didn’t feel like watching them in this order really spoiled anything for me . Let’s start with the positives , there’s plenty of creepy imagery , the score is great , the acting is good , and I can feel the effort behind every frame . Some negatives … well the pseudo 3d in the film doesn’t work all that great and can be a bit distracting and I’m not crazy about one or two of the plot points . Overall though , I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone with a taste for the weird .
