“Now you understand me – I’ll cut your throat from ear to ear – do you understand me ?”

Summary : So can you imagine you’re a guy named Thornhill . You got an important task , you’ve got to deliver a string of pearls to a woman (Johanna Oakley) , and tell said woman that her lover is possibly dead . What would you do ? Go straight to her or would you stop for a shave and start saying out loud to the weird barber (Sweeney Todd) what your task is ? Oh , you chose the latter … well at least Johanna is still informed by someone else about her lover but now an investigation is opened up on the disappearance of Thornhill . This will open up a tale of murder , shaving , poisoning , blackmail , thievery , and false imprisonment . Enough to make a man hungry , hey , let’s get some pie .
“Laughed ! do you call that a laugh ? I suppose you caught it of somebody who died of it . If that’s your way of laughing , I beg you won’t do it anymore .”

Review : Let’s get this out of the way . Ladies and gentlemen , this story is the debut of one Sweeney Todd to the world and I got to say it’s pretty damn good . Todd is not a sympathetic character like he is at times portrayed as on film . Instead he is a full blown evil son of a bitch and I think that’s a good thing . Not every villain needs a sob story , let the villain be a villain I say . Also I like how the story is told , almost every chapter takes you to a different character , so you can feel the larger ramifications of the crimes committed . A lot of the dialogue is melodramatic but that’s just how penny dreadfuls were and I enjoy it . Give it a read folks !
“Hush , father , hush ! I know the name that is hovering on your lips , but something seems even now to whisper to me he is no more , and , being so , speak nothing of him , but that which is good .”
