Some thoughts on superhero/vigilante fiction

Since I’ve made this last month dedicated to superhero/vigilante stories I figured it might be fun to point out some things I noticed .

One thing that seems consistent is family tragedy . Almost all the main characters of these stories have lost a family member to violence . The Punisher and Paul Benjamin lose their wife and kids , The Domino Lady’s father gets assassinated , Batman loses both his parents to a random thief , and Superman’s entire race gets blown up . While losing a family member is always hard , it’s a whole new level of pain when it’s ended by violent means , and that is probably why this catalyst is consistent across vigilante fiction .

Another thing is the need to do more than what is legal . Well , I mean that is just the definition of vigilante . On a bigger or a deeper level I should say they feel a more direct need than the average person to set the world right . Call it justice , vengeance , or punishment but something needs to be done to balance the world out .

Use of force . Now the level is different depending on the character but every vigilante can and will use force . The Domino Lady uses various non-lethal means but has a gun just in case . Batman doesn’t kill but doesn’t always save a villain from dying . Superman is willing to kill but prefers to settle things diplomatically . The Punisher and Paul Benjamin prefer a guns blazing approach though .

Anyways , that is just a few things that popped up in my head . Peace out everyone !
